Who We Are:

The Nimham Mountain Singers, formed in 1999, is a group of singers with the goal of fostering, preserving and rediscovering traditional Native American beliefs, values and spirituality.

Based in the Hudson Valley of New York State, we sing and share with our communities northern woodland songs, mostly of the first people, the Algonquin speaking peoples.

We perform at schools, civic events and pow wows and offer a complete educational program of drumming, traditional songs and dances, and Wappinger (Nochpeem) cultural history designed for children and adults. We are also available for private parties and gatherings. Contact us for booking information.

We completed the majority of the Wappinger Memorial this year and held a dedication ceremony on November 11, 2007. We plan to add shrubbery behind the memorial and a bronze statue of Daniel Nimham by sculptor Mike Keropian. $16,000 is still needed to help us complete this monument.

Who is Daniel Nimham?

 

 Daniel Nimham (1724-1778) was a chief of the Wappinger Indians and was the most prominent Native American of his time living in the Hudson Valley.

The Wappingers descended from ancestors who were forced to part with their best lands during the preceding century, and who roamed the hills and valleys of Putnam and Dutchess Counties.
Mt Nimham Fire Tower

The tallest remaining Fire Tower in New York State has completed its restoration project and sits atop the 1200 foot mountain named after Daniel Nimham.
